Gifts of this type help to sustain Martin Luther Chapel throughout the year.

For more information, contact the Martin Luther Chapel office to obtain an application. Your application, along with a voided check or a savings deposit slip, can be dropped off at Martin Luther Chapel or submitted to: Martin Luther Chapel, 444 Abbot Rd., E. Lansing, MI 48823.

Thrivent Choice Dollars

Eligible benefit members of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans can now help choose where Thrivent Financial distributes a portion of its charitable funds through Choice Dollars,” part of the organization’s Thrivent Choice charitable grant program. Potential amounts range from $25 to $500 for each eligible benefit member.

Here’s how “Choice Dollars” works:  • Designated Choice Dollars are based on qualifying insurance premiums, qualifying contract values and Thrivent Financial volunteer leadership. • Choice Dollars can be directed to thousands of Lutheran churches and organizations nationwide, including Martin Luther Chapel, by visiting the Thrivent Choice website or by calling 800-THRIVENT (800-847-4836) and saying, “Thrivent Choice.” Eligible Thrivent Financial members who have Choice Dollars available have until March 31 of the following year to direct any remaining Choice Dollars.

Tools for Giving

There are a variety of ways you can contribute to the ministry at Martin Luther Chapel. Gifts without restriction provide the maximum flexibility and enable the ministry to meet unexpected needs or to expand its ministry. However, you may also designate your gift for a specific part of the ministry.

Outright Cash Gift – You can make an outright gift of cash by mailing a personal check made payable to Martin Luther Chapel, or by donating online.

Qualified Charitable Distribution - If you are 70 1/2 or older, you can give a direct gift from your IRA to Martin Luther Chapel, and this direct transfer can qualify as your RMD in full or in part, thus reducing your taxable income.

Gifts of Securities – A gift of stocks, bonds, real estate, or other assets may be made to Martin Luther Chapel. An outright gift of appreciated stock eliminates any capital gains tax and allows you to claim an income-tax deduction based on the full market value of long-term securities, regardless of their original cost.

Bequest by Will – You can designate a gift or portion of your estate to Martin Luther Chapel and, in some cases, receive a substantial reduction in federal gift and estate taxes. You may fund such a gift with cash, marketable securities, real estate, tangible property, or closely held stock. IRA’s, 401(k) or 403(b) or other Retirement Plans – Naming Martin Luther Chapel as beneficiary of these plans will benefit our ministry and may also result in significant tax benefits.

Life Insurance – There are a variety of ways life insurance can be utilized as a gift. They include: 1) giving a paid up policy; 2) assigning the annual dividends of a policy; 3) designating the Chapel as the beneficiary of an existing policy; and 4) purchasing a new policy and designating the Chapel as the owner and beneficiary of the policy.

Charitable Remainder Trust – You can place cash or property in a trust that pays annual income to you (or another named beneficiary) for life. After your death, remaining assets transfer to Martin Luther Chapel. You receive income tax benefits the year you establish your trust. Charitable Lead Trust – You can place cash or property into a trust that pays a fixed amount to Martin Luther Chapel for the number of years you select. Once this period ends, the assets held by the trust are transferred to the beneficiaries you name. In some cases, you receive a substantial reduction in federal gift and estate taxes. Other assets may also be given to the Chapel with possible tax benefits, such as, collectibles, real property, etc. For more information please contact Martin Luther Chapel.

Endowment Fund

Martin Luther Chapel has established a permanent Endowment Fund, the purpose of which is to support the Chapel’s proclamation of the Gospel in our community. Gifts made to the Endowment Fund are set aside and permanently invested, with the income from the fund used to support the ministry and mission of the Chapel, including student ministry programs, international ministry programs, youth programs, ministry staff, building repair and maintenance, other missions, and music ministry. The Fund is kept separate and apart from the day-to-day operating funds of the congregation. Your gifts to the Endowment Fund will provide long-term financial stability to the Chapel, providing the resources necessary for continued improvement of our outreach to the University and to the East Lansing community, and the development of future ministries. For more information please contact the office at Martin Luther Chapel.
